I often use white paper-towels cut into quarters and markers to "practice" a pattern. . . I will draw black dashed lines to indicate folds.
Always use cotton materials. It will produce much better results than synthetics. . .

When it opens, the folds
should look like this
Next, apply your
dye. I always use:
Procion(TM) MX Fiber Reactive Dyes from Dharma
Trading. I use sponge brushes. The picture I have shown
is a side view, but I actually apply the dye along the folds and allow
it to soak toward the middle. Be careful about how much dye you apply.
It must penetrate four (in my example of a plain piece of material) or
eight (in the case of a T-shirt) layers of material; don't soak the material
to the point of dripping ~ it is wasteful, messy, and the end result will
not be nearly as pleasing (unless that is the effect you are pursuing or
you are using dyes or dye techniques that require dipping or dunking.)
